Πασαδάκης Νικόλαος (επιβλέπων) Δρ. Αντωνίου Ελευθερία Δρ. Μαρινάκης Δημήτριος Περίληψη One of the most challenging issues in the oil production industry is the treatment of oil-in-water emulsions. Such emulsions may occur during enhanced oil recovery methods, workover of oil wells, or even during the conventional steady state production process. Incomplete resolution of the emulsions results in loss of production and environmental hazards from the disposal of the production water. The present thesis is focused on the methods and equipment used for the treatment of oil-in-water emulsions. Initially the mechanism for the emulsion formation is explained, as well as the characteristics of each type of emulsions. Subsequently, a detailed description of the separation stages is provided along with the type of equipment used and processes that take place during the emulsion separation. The chemical additives that facilitate the treatment are analytically presented. Both the equipment and chemicals can vary between each case depending on the oil and water characteristics and the regulatory restrictions in each country. Newly introduced chemicals, equipment and processes are presented along with the established ones. A major role in the success of such treatment plants plays the continuous optimization of both the equipment’s operation conditions, as well as the dosage and types of additives used for the resolution of the oil-in-water emulsion. The scope of such optimization is always the minimization of the cost and the improvement of the separation efficiency. The process’ economics is the most significant factor, so information related to the costs of treatment plans of oil in water emulsions is presented in the last chapter.
