Or should we think that all we do is to adapt traditional solutions to new conditions and that the only improvement is the one that comes from the use of new techniques?
Should we accept what Shakespeare explained when describing the way he produced his poetry:
Why is my verse so barren of new pride,
So far from variation or quick change?
…
So all my best is dressing old words new,
Spending again what is already spent.*
Working in a building like the ancient Mosque of Córdoba, today a Cathedral, the above questions get an immediate answer. The building followed from the very beginning a model of extension after extension, in which the architects and their patrons have insistently copied the first Mosque built by the Emir Abd-al-Rahman in the year 785.
But even this original building was done following an older model: a Christian basilica like those elevated in the Roman Hispania before the arrival of the Muslims. A constructive type that followed the tradition established by the Emperor Constantine in the first churches he ordered to build in Jerusalem.
That is why in Spanish historical tradition, so often, we describe the Mosque and Cathedral of Cordova as: Monumentolatino-bizantino.
The system used by the architect of Abd-al-Rahman has to do with what we call Redivivasaxa, that is to reuse old stones inside a new order and with a new meaning. Those stones cannot be considered spolia because of the symbolic character they supported when reused. Redivivasaxa is a concept that means the stones get, through their new use, new life.
What I should like to explain in my intervention is how, when we have to develop works of restoration in this building, we systematically try to reuse the materials: wood, bricks, tiles or stones that the monument provides, adding the minimum of new pieces when the old ones are broken or damaged.
The invention is then where the English poet proposed, inspending again what is already spent.
There is probably some sense of ecological understanding in this position, but it is pure tradition.
