Title
Autonomous Marine Vessel Systems and Operations
Abstract
Waterborne transport has always been the most economical way for moving freight all over the world. The vision of waterborne transport is autonomous shipping that will enhance the sustainability and efficiency of cargo transport at open sea, inland waterway transport of cargo and people and construction of offshore and onshore infrastructure. Autonomy is enabled by the digitization and automatization of shipping operations and plays a key role in establishing safety as a cultural value. In this presentation we will discuss how to design autonomous marine vessel systems and operations to guarantee performance under uncertain conditions and unexpected events (faults), giving emphasis on the control and coordination challenges. The main application areas that will be presented are the inland waterway transport, the multiple-vessel operations, the offshore heavy lifting operations and the reconfigurable vessel automation design.

Vasso Reppa (v.reppa<at>tudelft.nl) has been an Assistant Professor in the Department of Maritime and Transport Technology of Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands since 2018, and member of the coordinating team of the ResearchLab Autonomous Shipping (https://rasdelft.nl/ ). She obtained the doctorate (2010) in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Patras, Greece. In 2009 she joined IBM Zurich Research Laboratory in Switzerland as a student intern. From 2011 to 2017, she was a Research Associate (now Research Affiliate) with the KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence in Cyprus. In 2013, Dr. Reppa was awarded the Marie Curie Intra European Fellowship and worked as a Research Fellow in CentraleSupélec of the University Paris-Saclay, France from 2014 to 2016. She was a Visiting Researcher at Imperial College, the UK and at University of Newcastle, Australia in 2015 and 2016, respectively. Her current research interests include multi-level, multi-agent fault diagnosis and fault tolerant control, cooperative control, (adaptive) learning, observer-based estimation, and applications of autonomous systems in (waterborne) transport and smart buildings. Dr Reppa is involved in several research and development projects on autonomous and fault tolerant operation of waterborne transport systems and operations: INTERREG ‘AVATAR’, H2020 ‘NOVIMOVE’(https://novimove.eu/ ), NWO ‘READINESS’ (https://www.ship-readiness.nl/ ), Marie Curie ITN ’AUTOBarge’ (https://etn-autobarge.eu/ ) and 3mE Cohesion Project SCoop.
