Title: Dynamic ride-sharing problems and solution techniques
Abstract: Ride-sharing services offer on-demand, door-to-door transportation that allows passengers to split the cost of their ride with others, headed in a similar direction. A user requests transportation from a desired pickup point at a desired pickup time, to a desired drop-off point. A stream of such incoming requests must be serviced by a fleet of vehicles. The route of each vehicle is continuously adapted, so that as many requests as possible are served within chosen detour constraints. This talk addresses several flavors of the associated computational problem, known as Dynamic Dial-a-Ride and discusses main challenges of offering such a service in practice.
Short Bio: Born in Chania, Greece, K. S. Mountakis graduated from the school of Electrical Engineering of the Technical University of Crete and he proceeded obtaining an MSc and eventually a PhD in Computer Science at the Delft University of Technology. There, he developed a deep interest in temporal constraint solving and various forms of stochastic resource-constrained scheduling. His post-doctoral work, at the Technical University of Crete, focused on optimal control methods for autonomous vehicle highway path-planning. Currently he works as an Algorithm Engineer at MOIA GmbH.
