The Joy of Being a "Programmatistis"
Περίληψη
The challenge that all programmers face when they finish their university degrees is that they cannot find work, because they do not have any experience. And they cannot get experience, because they need a job first. In this talk, Dr Heinz Kabutz will talk about these challenges and will offer concrete tips to overcome this difficulty. Heinz made his first software sale in his second year of university. During his second year, he had written a stock tracking product for a very large supermarket in South Africa. He managed to commercialize his Masters degree work and sold that to an international company in France. Besides writing software to earn some money, he also did consulting and tutored younger students in order to pay for his university and living expenses. Despite all this, he completed all his PhD work before he turned 25 and then started working as a programmer. Getting a job was easy, because he could point to all the experience that he had gotten during his studies.
In his talk, Dr Heinz Kabutz will demonstrate some coding tips that professional coders use to become far more productive. He will also explain why it is absolutely essential (para poli symantiko!!!) that you finish your university studies as quickly as possible, especially in Computer Science and related fields. He will also talk about concrete examples of where even a 1st year student can earn money with the information he has learned and thus get practical experience. He will show projects that students can get involved in to get international recognition for their abilities and thus make finding good work much easier. He will also briefly mention why he has chosen to live on the Akrotiri for the last 10 years and will especially talk about the first year earning $80 an hour coding on the beach of Marathi.
