Quantum sciences: The challenge of controlling and using complex quantum systems
In this seminar I will discuss in a general and non-technical way some aspects of the most recent research on quantum sciences, dealing with the challenge of controlling and using complex quantum systems. In the first part of the seminar I will discuss the exciting idea of a powerful quantum computer, as well as the latest and hopefully more feasible concept of a quantum simulator. In the second part of the talk I will focus on the specific problem of designing devices for the reliable storage of quantum information, the so-called quantum memories. I will introduce some general aspects of topological quantum matter, explaining why it is a promising candidate for a storing device and what problems are still be solved.
About the speaker
Dr. Leonardo Mazza studied physics in Pisa at Scuola Normale Superiore and Università di Pisa. After a master thesis on light-matter interaction in organic semiconductors, he moved to Munich for his PhD at the Max-Planck-Institut of Quantum Optics in the group of Prof. Ignacio Cirac. During his PhD he mainly focused on quantum simulations of topological matter with cold atoms. In the last few years he has been working at Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa, focusing in non-equilibrium physics ranging from quantum quenches to entanglement dynamics.
