Ultra-low Cost Reception of Backscatter-enabled Environmental Sensing: Challenges and Current Progress

Abstract
Backscatter-enabled sensors typically exploit the change of specific mechanical (e.g. shape) or electromagnetic properties (e.g. dielectric constant) of the sensor’s antenna, in response to external environmental triggers (e.g. humidity, temperature). The readout of such sensed information typically involves expensive laboratory equipment (e.g. with pico-second response time). This talk offers the challenges and current progress on ultra low-cost reception of backscatter-enabled sensor information, exploiting the fundamental principles of backscatter radio. The talk will discuss concrete design of non-coherent, bistatic, software-defined scatter radio reception that allowed extended communication ranges, in sharp contrast to prior art (typically limited to a few tens of meters). Fundamental differences with conventional (Marconi-type) radio will be explained. Key design strategies based on the tag/sensor structural mode, followed in this work but typically overlooked by a multi-million industry will be also highlighted. The talk will be concluded with recent results on integrated design of sensors and scatter radio communicators, demos, as well as research challenges in the exciting field of scatter radio sensor networking!
