    Abstract
This presentation will focus on our current research activities using tools and methodological approaches such as life-cycle analysis and flow of materials to develop new methodologies for the determination of the best scenario for the management of municipal solid waste in urban Brazilian areas. Analysed mechanisms for environmental management of municipal solid waste included various phases; from waste collection and transport to the final destination in landfills, passing through recycling, incine- ration, energy recovery and composting. A special focus was put on the metropolis of Rio de Janeiro. About 6.3 million residents in 2011 produced app. 3.16 million tons of municipal waste, but only about 2 wt -% were sent to a recycling process. The current disposal method is the deposition in a sanitary landfill. The waste includes more than 50 wt -% of organics. This gives a high greenhouse gas emission- and pollutant release potential. Even with landfill gas recovery and power generation, the current waste disposal leads to climate relevant greenhouse gas emissions of app. 2 million tons / year. The combustion in modern waste incinerators would lead to a release of about 1.4 million tons / year and a combined mechanical-bio-logical treatment with refused derived fuel incineration to app. 1.2 million tons / year. The presentation will show that the current waste disposal has environmental disadvantages compared to incineration or mechanical-biological treatment technologies. The high percentage of waste landfilled without pre-treatment needs a technical improvement of the Brazilian waste management system to meet the current environmental requirements. Also the development of future scenarios with a separate collection of about 50% of the organic components from the residual waste shows advantages over the original scenarios. Moreover investigations about the more intensely developed informal sector in waste management are presented and will show a need for further integrating the informal sector into future scenarios to support the efforts of recycling and resource conservation.
