'UpdateMyCity' Conference and Workshop: Public Space, Smart Technologies and Urban Health

When: 26-27-28 July 2021
Where: Chania, Crete, Greece

ORGANISERS-PARTNERS: UN-HABITAT - Technical University of Crete (TUC) - Global Pandemic Network (GPN) - CMA (Center for Mediterranean Architecture, KEPPEDIH - CAM)

The 'UpdateMyCity' conference and workshop aims at stimulating the discussion about the smart transformation of cities and the necessary multi-domain framework for practically implementing localized strategies to resolve urban planning challenges. Based on the collaborative work that is taking place among the Center for Mediterranean Architecture, the municipality of Chania, the Technical University of Crete, the United Nations Human Settlements Programme, and the Global Pandemic Network the event will promote knowledge transfer and sharing of good practices on the use of new technologies to better use and manage public spaces for citizen's wellbeing, mental and physical health.

The event will teach participants a) to work with the UN's public space assessment methodology on the city of Chania, and b) to develop strategies for better use and management of the public space in the city of Chania.

During a three-day discussion and workshop with practitioners and the academic sector participants will pursue a more specific objective: to equip the Municipality of Chania with actions and a roadmap to improve the quality and the efficiency of its public spaces, including their accessibility and fruition, as well as to enhance the sharing of information between responsible institutions and citizens and, thus, community engagement in the governance of public spaces, with a positive impact on the quality of life and on urban health. The strategy will also contribute to the promotion of digital rights in the city (data protection, proper use of surveillance technology, etc.), further strengthening governance frameworks and supporting the city in embedding them in local governance processes and services.
