On December 16, 2019 during the UNITWIN - UNESCO's Network Conference in Paris, the School of Architecture of the Technical University of Crete has been accepted unanimously as a member of the network. The candidature of the School has been presented and supported by TUC Associate Professor Amalia Kotsaki, and TUC Assistant Professor Alexandros Vazakas in Paris. Βoth professors, in collaboration with Klimis Aslanides and Panita Karamanea, Assistant professors of the School of Architecture, prepared the submission of the School's candidature.
The UNITWIN - UNESCO network "Culture, Tourism, Development" was founded in 2002 by the UNESCO Chair Culture, Tourism, Development from Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne and is made up of 30 universities through the world. The UNITWIN-UNESCO network is a closely knit system of cooperation in research, documentation and training to facilitate exchanges and knowledge-sharing among universities, decision makers, non-governmental organizations, civil society and the private sector, a worldwide pool of skills and experts. The goals of the network is to create a worldwide system of cooperation between universities in the fields of culture, tourism and development, to promote the concepts, principles and objectives of UNESCO incorporated in its documents of reference, to obtain a better understanding of nature and the complex ties between tourism, culture and a sustainable development of territories, to encourage a responsible and ethical vision of tourism as a means of sustainable development of territories and enhancing cultural diversity, to help the development of strategies and projects which are environmentally sustainable, socially fair, sensible from a business point of view and with a cultural value and to get expertise closer to the policy decision-makers to benefit the populations, especially those in poverty. The UNITWIN-UNESCO network obtains all these goals through:International Network for constantly sharing educational experiences, continuing education and applied research to improve them, also through the use of information technologies, by producing and providing education modules and tools, by promoting local cooperation through academic mobility, partnership between cities, supporting training programs and exchanges, especially in the Southern countries by setting up projects with multiple partnerships, and by having grades and masters created within the Network internationally recognized and acknowledged by a brand of excellence. Each December, the members of UNITWIN UNESCO network present, the activity report and the agenta for the next year, at UNESCO headquarters in Paris. On December 16, 2019 the UNITWIN has organized a seminar titled "Changement climatique, Patrimoine Mondial et Tourisme”, a cooperation of UNIWIN-UNESCO "Culture, Tourism, Development" Network and the Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, together with the Centre du Patrimoine Mondial de l’UNESCO, ICOMOS France and the Association des biens français du patrimoine mondial.
The integration of the School of Architecture of TUC to the UNITWIN UNESCO network, reinforces the outreach of the University and enables the creation of a postgraduate program in collaboration with distinguished universities under the auspices of UNESCO.
