An new edited volume (MDPI, 358 pages, 2022), titled "Advances in Architectural Acoustics", has been published recently by MDPI Books. The book has been edited by Dr. Nikolaos Papadakis and Prof. Georgios Stavroulakis of the School of Production Engineering and Management, both members of the Computational Mechanics and Optimization Laboratory at the Technical University of Crete, in collaboration with Prof. Massimo Garai from the University of Bologna. The book contains 18 articles from various areas of architectural acoustics, written from researchers and designers.
Satisfactory acoustics is crucial for the ability of spaces, such as auditoriums and lecture rooms, to perform their primary function. The acoustics of dwellings and offices greatly affects our life quality, since we are all consciously or subconsciously aware of the sounds to which we are subjected to daily. Architectural acoustics, which encompasses room and building acoustics, is the scientific field that deals with these topics and can be defined as the study of the generation, propagation, and effects of sound in enclosures.
The book brings together articles aimed at a holistic approach to the subject of Architectural Acoustics in areas, such as Computational Acoustics, Acoustics of Historic Buildings, Acoustics of Concert Halls and Auditoriums, Acoustic Absorbing Elements, Acoustics and Human Perception, as well as Acoustic and Machine Learning.
The Acoustics Section of the Computational Mechanics and Optimization Laboratory at the Technical University of Crete conducts research in various areas, such as Architectural Acoustics, Environmental Acoustics, Soundscape Acoustics, etc., while it has the ability to apply advanced Computational Acoustics techniques for the holistic and optimal treatment of practical Architectural Acoustics problems.
