A team of students from the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) of the Technical University of Crete, namely Minas Katsiokalis (postgraduate), Yiannis Kritikos (postgraduate), Andreas Polychronakis (doctoral), Michalis Oikonomakis (undergraduate), Konstantina Mammou (undergraduate), Michalis Nikiforakis (undergraduate), Anna Minadaki (undergraduate) and Giorgos Protopapadakis (undergraduate), all members of the SURREAL 3D computer graphics and augmented reality research group of Laboratory MUSIC, took part in the Brackeys Game Jam 2023.1 global competition and won the 1st place worldwide in the "Innovation" category among more than 3,900 teams and 742 projects.
Game Jams are limited-time innovative game creation contests with the contest theme announced at start time. Brackeys Game Jams, one of the most popular global competitions, started in 2018 and has been held twice a year since then, with participation from professional gaming studios and amateur teams from around the world. This year's competition 2023.1 started on February 12, 2023, lasted until February 19, 2023 and its theme was "An end is a new beginning". During this week the group of students worked intensively, with many late nights and early mornings in the laboratory. It is worth noting that the submission to the competition was made on the sole initiative of the students themselves.
The team members would like to warmly thank Stelios Grigorakis, an undergraduate student at the School of ECE, who after the completion of the game, devoted valuable time to the debugging process, as the team is interested in continuing the development of the game.
The game UnSentenced developed by the team that won the 1st place can be played on any computer (Windows, MacOs, Linux) through a browser by following the link https://yinnyann.itch.io/unsentenced.
