Digital Media Lab at Technical University of Crete Partners with Ministry of Culture to Modernize Old Acropolis Museum

The research team at the Digital Media Lab, School of Architecture, Technical University of Crete is beyond proud to announce a groundbreaking agreement with the Ministry of Culture to undertake a project of historic significance: the modernization and enhancement of the Old Acropolis Museum through innovative digital technologies.

This initiative is more than just a museum exhibit—it is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to bring history to life through immersive storytelling, interactive installations, and cutting-edge digital experiences. Visitors will be invited to step inside an immersive experience with history in motion. The Parthenon stands as an enduring testament to democracy—an architectural and artistic symbol where history, ideals, and citizens converge. Standing in the shadow of the Parthenon, the museum will become a space for Reflection, Engagement, and Transformation, inviting visitors to step into the heart of ancient Athens and witness its evolution before their eyes.

This ambitious project unites a multidisciplinary team of architects, archaeologists, 3D modelers, artists, computer engineers, animators, directors, and historians—all working together to create an unparalleled visitor experience by leveraging the latest digital technologies, including virtual and augmented reality, advanced 3D scanning and animation techniques, and artificial intelligence.

“We are thrilled to embark on this transformative journey that will redefine how visitors engage with history,” said Panos Parthenios, Head of the Digital Media Lab. “Our mission is to bridge the past and the future, making history an interactive and engaging experience for all.”

Through this project, we aim to transform the museum into a dialogue across generations, an invitation to engage with democracy as a living, breathing entity.
