Award for Best Research Paper World Automation Congress 2012
The original research paper "A System-of-Systems Approach for Improving Healthcare Systems" by Professors Evangelos Grigoroudis, Vasilis Kouikoglou and Yannis A. Phillis of the Department of Production Engineering & Management received the first prize for Best Research Paper of the World Automation Congress 2012 held on 24-27 June 2012 in Mexico. The objective of this paper is to offer a mathematical description of a national health system covering all of its stages, from primary to tertiary care, and their effects on the longevity and prosperity of the population. Moreover, it provides a mathematical analysis of the decision-making process about the size and the partial allocation of national resources in order to maximize the longevity of the population, to the extent that the latter depends on national health policy. The award was signed by M. Jamshidi, Professor of the University of Texas and father of the so-called fuzzy logic and L. Zadeh, famous Professor at the University of California at Berkeley.
