The SPE Student Chapter of the Technical University of Crete has been awarded the "2021 Student Excellence Excellence Award" by the International Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) in recognition of the quality of its overall outreach activities during the academic year 2020-2021.
This prestigious distinction is awarded annually to the top 20% of the SPE Student Chapters in the world. Among this year's award recipients there were prominent academic institutes and universities with well-established reputation in the fields of Petroleum and Energy Engineering, such as the Colorado School of Mines, Stanford University, Institut Francais du Petrol, Khalifa University, Kuwait University, Peking University and the University of Southern California.
The activities of the SPE Student Chapter of the Technical University of Crete have been organized by its members, undergraduate and post-graduate students of the School of Mineral Resources Engineering, Marios Stylianos Akritidis, Charilaos Margiolakis, Vaggelis Afthentopoulos, Tryfwnas Kiaitsis and Charalampos-Aris Vlachokiriakos in collaboration with their faculty advisor Prof. Andreas Yiotis, Assistant Professor at the School of Mineral Resources Engineering.
This year's activities included a series of technical and more general seminars in the fields of Petroleum and Gas Engineering, Renewable Energy, Energy Transition and the Environmental Impact of the Energy Industry in collaboration with world-leading academic institutes in the field, such as the University of Southern California. Among the distinguished speakers there were Dr. Olga Vizika-Kavvadias (IFP Energies Nouvelles), Dr. Dimitrios Krinis (Saudi Aramco), Mr. Steven Shryock (Chevron), Mr. Kirk Harris (Halliburton, Oxy, Talisman Energy, Repsol)., Mr. Yannis Grigoriou (former manager HELPE Upstream) and Dr. Athanassios Stubos (NCSR Demokritos). Many of these seminars were organized in the framework of the SPE Gaia Sustainability Program and the SPE Ambassador Lecturer Program, thus actively participating in established world-wide energy-related initiatives.
